First Sorrowful Mystery

Then Jesus came with them
to a place called Gethsemane,
and He said to his disciples
sit here while I go over there and pray.

Matthew 26, 36

Jesus knew that He had been betrayed by His own friend
and rejected by the Jewish leaders.
We can imagine Him after His Last Supper going to pray in a garden.
Knowing that His enemies are near
The fear was so great on the Son that His blood was exuded with the perspiration on His face.

He is frightened. He is a man and fears want the pain and death ahead of Him.
As He prayed His spirit grew stronger, and He rose to face what would become.

Help us face, O Lord,
the darkness where we are tempted,
and weak, and steady us
when we are afraid.
By the mystery of your prayer
and agony in the garden,
have mercy on us!
